Samuel and I were best friends. We collected skeleton keys, tektites, and anything we could find in the junkyard behind his house. We spent months trying to open doors with the keys we found.
A pair of grade school collectors, determined to build a cardboard rocket ship. We were beyond obsessed with the films Flight of the Navigator, Heavy Metal, and Explorers. There was no choice other than to see each other everyday, since birth due to our mother’s being very close.
Summer school was a block away from his parent’s house; where we kept our operation in tact. Any free time we had was spent on building the perfect vehicle to transport us to the planets that were aligned in our heads and on our wallpaper. It became a ritual; directly after lunch we would proceed. In July, the ritual became more complex. When left unsupervised, during a commercial we pulled down our pants and gave each other handjobs. It was a strange and wonderful mutual satisfaction. Not better or worse than all the girls that would come much later, just different. This continued until Christmas.
By December our rocket was complete and we spent all of our time sleeping in it and playing books on tape about the galaxies above. On Christmas Eve, we were caught with our pants down by his father Bryan. I’m sure he thought we were both gay. He ordered us to put our clothes on and to come to dinner. After that night I never heard from Samuel again.
The holidays don’t mean shit to me. The only thing I have ever done to celebrate anything in the snow was to shoot bottle rockets off rooftops, hoping that he’d see them wherever he was.
